Learn about Tarot Cards
A tarot deck is a set of 78 illustrated cards used for reflection, guidance and storytelling. It’s divided into the Major Arcana (22 cards) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards). Each card carries symbolic imagery and themes that can illuminate situations, feelings and potential outcomes. The Major Arcana represents big life lessons, archetypes and major turning points; examples include The Fool (beginnings, potential), The Lovers (choices, relationships), Death (endings and transformation) and The World (completion, integration). The Minor Arcana focuses on everyday events, attitudes and practical matters and is split into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Wands speak to energy, creativity and ambition; Cups to emotions, relationships and intuition; Swords to thoughts, communication and conflict; and Pentacles to work, money and the material world. Each suit contains ten numbered cards (Ace to Ten) plus four court cards—Page, Knight, Queen and King—which can represent people, personality traits or aspects of the querent: Pages often indicate messages or beginnings, Knights action and movement, Queens inner maturity and care, and Kings outward authority and mastery.
How Tarot card readings work
A reader shuffles and draws cards into a spread, or pattern. Common spreads include a one-card daily draw, a three card spread past–present–future layout, and the Celtic Cross. Interpretation depends on the card meanings, each card’s position in the spread, the reader’s intuition and the question asked. Cards can appear upright or reversed, (which is when the card is drawn upside down.) Some readers use reversals to indicate blocked energy, internalized aspects or opposite meanings, while others read all cards upright.
Aproaches to learning
Start with a single-card or three-card daily practice to build familiarity. Focus on one suit or a single Major Arcana card at a time and note how its meaning appears in your life. Keep a tarot journal to record draws, feelings, keywords and outcomes. Learn common keyword lists, but prioritise the card’s imagery and your personal associations, over one particular meaning, the card are multi faceted and meanings depend largely on the situation or mood of the reading. Have fun, and practice with simple spreads and readings for friends to gain confidence.
Tarot intuition and ethics
Tarot is a tool for reflection rather than a definitive prediction. Use it to explore options and uncover inner truth, by asking open, specific questions such as “What should I consider about this job offer?” instead of “Will I get this job?” Always respect confidentiality when reading for others while avoiding promises about medical, legal, or financial outcomes.
Choosing a Deck
Choose imagery that resonates. Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith style is widely used for learning because many resources reference it. Experiment with different artists and themes until one feels right for you.
Common beginner mistakes
Memorising only keywords without connecting to the imagery.
Asking too vague or outcome-focused questions.
Over-relying on one reading; tarot offers perspectives, not absolutes.
Tarot Resources for Practice
Daily draws, simple spreads, group readings and journaling.
Study guidebooks, card meanings lists and symbol glossaries.
Workshops or online communities for feedback and shared learning.
Final tips
Be patient—fluency comes with regular practice; treat tarot as a mirror for inner work and practical insight, and keep an open, curious mindset so card meanings can expand as you learn.
