The Pulp Tarot
I picked up this deck at a small local bookstore after it was suggested by one of our viewers as an addition to the Top 10 Tarot Decks list.
I loved it immediately for its packaging - the box has been cleverly designed to look like a small, slightly worn, vintage hardcover book. ❤
I was very excited to find this deck, and my excitement was equally shared by the cashier as she rang up my purchase.
The Pulp Tarot deck is by Todd Alcott, a screenwriter, filmmaker and graphic artist, it takes you on a retro Tarot journey through the world of pulp fiction. Each card features bold illustrations that tell the tale of the Fool’s Journey through the spirit of classic comics and 20th century magazine-cover imagery. Alcott's unique artistic vision captures the essence of traditional Tarot while infusing it with a playful twist, making every card an invitation to explore the Tarot narratives in a new way. With its fresh and engaging designs, The Pulp Tarot deck is perfect for anyone looking to add a splash of excitement to their readings. This deck will appeal to anyone who loves comic books, pop art or anything with a retro 50’s, 60’s, 70’s style to it.
The box opens up like a book, of course, to reveal the cards and standard little white book. Card quality is pretty basic, these are made of thinner card stock, easy to handle and shuffle, but will wear out quickly. Not an issue for me, I think these cards will probably look even better worn a bit, as it will lend itself to the vintage aesthetic.
The little white book is includes is very basic. Printed on plain white paper, the deck would have been even more delightful if the book had been created to look like a tiny comic or magazine, but it serves its purpose.
00 The Fool from the Pulp Tarot.
“The Fool is Blessed. She runs blithely off a cliff, not paying the slightest attention to the topography. She holds her white flower as she charges ahead, not a care in the world. The local dog happily trots beside her. It may be her pet, it may be her spirit guide. She may plummet to her death or she may take off and fly. The point is, she’s enjoying this moment of pure joy and has faith in the universe.”
The Pulp Tarot is based on RWS, the traditional major arcana are all represented, as are the classic suits - Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles.
